01 Jun Plastic not so fantastic
Sea pollution is any rubbish that ends up in the water that affects anything that lives there. This could be sewage, chemicals, litter and plastic. Litter and plastic are often the more obvious pollution as these are highly visual.
Reports note that in the last 10 years the amount of litter around the UK coastline has doubled. One of the biggest problems is plastic. Some figures note that the UK uses circa 5 million tons of plastic. Recent legislation imposing charges for plastic bags have seen a reduction in consumption and council recycling schemes are doing some help to reduce wastage.
It is estimated that over 50% of the litter found on UK beaches is plastic. Not just being a visual blemish on the environment, birds often mistake plastic for food and this can lead to deadly results.
Running along the coast of Whitley Bay, Cullercoasts, Tynemouth, Seaton Sluice and Blyth there are varying degrees of litter and plastic on the beaches. Obviously the extent is dependent upon prevailing winds, tides and levels of pollution.
We can all do our little bit to help both the local and world environment.
CrossFit More in Whitley Bay will help you to be physically better but making the local environment better requires help from everyone. If you live along the north east coast why not get in contact and be more.
